BROOKLYN, Mich. —John Hunter Nemechek took his fifth victory of the season on Saturday, but after Stage 1 you couldn’t have predicted the eventual ending of today’s Xfinity race at Michigan Speedway.

About a dozen laps into Stage 1, a skirmish involving three Joe Gibbs Racing cars (Sammy Smith in the 18, Ty Gibbs in the 19, and Nemechek in the 20) knocked Smith out of the race and sent Gibbs and Nemechek spinning.

Luckily for Nemechek, no significant damage was incurred, and by Stage 2 he had found his way to the lead, and sailed away with a Stage 2 victory and eventually a race win at the end of 125 laps. Gibbs also recovered well and finished in 4th.

Of note, it was the 200th Xfinity race for Joe Gibbs Racing. Nemechek ended up leading 65 of the 125 laps in the race to earn his first victory in Brooklyn and the 7th of his Xfinity Series career.

Other strong runners were Josh Berry in 2nd, Brandon Jones with a 3rd place run that pushed him closer to the playoff cut line, and Sam Mayer following up last week’s win with a fifth-place run.

Regarding the JGR 200-win milestone, Nemechek said he was proud to be the guy who could make it happen.

“Being able to win multiple times this year for JGR in Xfinity is a huge accomplishment for the whole program. And I was the guy in the right place to bring home Win No. 200,” he said.

Regarding the incident early in the race with his teammates — which happened as all three were running tightly behind each other, Nemechek (who has been vocal about teammate concerns in recent weeks) took the blame.

“I take full accountability for the incident that happened today. I put Ty in a bad aero spot and he got free, and we both went spinning,” Nemechek said.

Nemechek was also asked about his plans for 2024, but said nothing has been decided and he is fully focused on winning the Xfinity title right now. He said he may not announce a decision about his future until after this season ends.

Xfinity Playoff battle

There was only minor movement at the playoff bubble. Parker Kligerman is still on the outside looking in, needing to make up 18 points on Sheldon Creed to qualify. With a handful of races left until the playoffs, there’s plenty of time to do so.

Jones was the big mover, gaining a nice chunk of his gap with the top-5 run. He’s now 45 points behind the cut line, so a win is his best shot to qualify, but 45 points in 5 races is also achievable if he’s consistently up front.
