While the regular version of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a solid offering, the brand was smart to realize that driving aficionados are always looking for that little bit extra, and the ultra-powerful 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N was born.

New for the 2025 model year, this all-wheel-drive electric SUV from Hyundai has the numbers to challenge everything in its class, and some contenders in classes above, and is focused purely on performance.

I recently spent some time behind the wheel of an Ioniq 5 N — with its 641 horsepower and racecar-worthy setup — and I’m back with with a full report.

LOOKS

Take one look at the Ioniq 5 N and you’ll immediately know it’s a hot rod.

The vehicle features a beautiful, bold design that is not shy at all — including futuristic LED lighting, beautiful wheel designs, a red racing stripe at the bottom, performance blue matte paint, and sharp sidelines and creases
.

The Ioniq 5 N comes with 21-inch forged alloy wheels, 4-piston front brake calipers; N-exclusive fascias, side skirts, rear diffuser and wheel arches, automatic LED projector headlights, LED tail lights and daytime running lights, hands-free smart power liftgate, and rain-sensing front windshield wipers.

There’s no other EV that looks like this on the planet, and Hyundai hit a home run with its design.

Moving inside the Ioniq 5 N, you will find premium seating made with Alcantara (suede substitute) and H-Tex (synthetic leather / leatherette) seating surfaces.

The vehicle also features sport bucket seats up front, which I found quite comfortable (something not always true with this style of seating). Front seats are also heated and ventilated for comfort in all seasons, and you get a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel. This N model shows you don’t have to give up all creature comforts just because you’re getting a sportier ride.

Ambient interior lighting is offered to spice up your ride, and the racy appearance of the vehicle is enhanced via metal pedals and door sill trim.

The Ioniq 5 N seats five adults comfortably, just like the normal Ioniq 5. This level of comfort for passengers is rare among performance focused vehicles.

In terms of cargo space, the Ioniq 5 N offers 26 cubic feet with rear seats up, and 59 cubic feet with rear seats down. These are decent but not spectacular numbers.

On the plus side, there’s plenty of storage spots in the Ioniq 5 N to stash your drinks, keys, wallet or other small items.

HOW’S THE RIDE?

The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N comes equipped with some serious heat, packing a dual-motor setup (one in front and one in rear), all-wheel drive and a maximum of 641 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. These are some strong numbers that are tough to find on an electric SUV that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

The peak horsepower and torque numbers come into play in short bursts when you push the N Grin Boost button on the steering wheel, and during regular driving, the numbers come in at 601 horsepower and 545 pound-feet, still solid numbers. The Ioniq 5 N also includes an 84.0 kWh lithium-ion battery.

For fans of drifting, a dedicated drive mode is included to enhance the drifting experience by managing power distribution and adjusting power to the front wheels. And the amount of customizations and adjustments you can make to prepare for on-track excursions are too many to count.

Other drive modes include Eco, Normal, Sport and two customizable N modes — which give various takes on steering weight, damping, and throttle sensitivity. The Ioniq 5 N also features a rear electronic limited slip differential, electronically controlled suspension, regenerative brake level control, and e-shift paddles.

In essence, this is a street-legal racecar. Using the N Grin Boost sends it into overdrive, but even without that boost this thing hauls and handles brilliantly at all times. It’s the type of vehicle made with driving aficionados in mind.

Zero-to-60 times come in at 3 seconds, which is tremendously fast and a number rarely seen in this price range. Whether moving quickly in a straight line or adeptly handling curvy roads or a racetrack, the Ioniq 5 N rarely misses a beat and delivers thrill after thrill.

Driving the Ioniq 5 N delivers about as much fun as you can have in a car without going for more high-end, ultra-expensive options from brands like Porsche and Lamborghini. I’d go so far as saying that it offers the most fun you’ll have in any electric SUV currently available in its price range. If you’re really thinking of testing its limits on a racetrack, the Ioniq 5 N maxes out at 163 mph.

TECHNOLOGY, SAFETY

The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N features the same strong technology as the regular Ioniq 5.

This setup features a customizable, 12.3-inch touchscreen as well as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

The screen’s touch commands are easy to master, and the system also accurately responds to voice commands.

A helpful navigation system is featured, along with HD radio, 3-month trial of satellite radio, and a Bose premium audio system that sounds loud and clear, with excellent bass performance.

The Ioniq 5 N is compatible with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connections, Bluelink Connected Services (controls vehicle features via app), USB ports in both rows, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless phone charger.

On the safety front, the highlight feature is Hyundai’s Highway Driving Assist, which does an effective job of controlling the vehicle without driver input. The system combines its advanced cruise control and lane keeping assistance features to keep you within your lane and an appropriate distance behind the vehicle ahead, and is especially helpful on longer trips.

The Ioniq 5 N also gets 5-star government safety ratings, thanks in part to solid features such as:
— Rearview Camera
— Airbags throughout the vehicle
— Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
— Driver Attention Warning
— Safe Exit Assist
— Surround View Monitor
— Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
— Blind-Spot View Monitor
— Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
— Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist-Reverse
— Parking Distance Warning - Reverse/Forward/Side
— Rear Occupant Alert

RANGE, CHARGING

The official fuel economy numbers on the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N are 78 MPGe combined, 84 MPGe city, 72 MPGe highway.

Its overall range on a full charge is 221 mpg, which is a bit lower than I would have liked, but is understandable considering the power this vehicle offers. Depending on your style of driving, you can probably push your total range past the 221 mark.

If you’re planning to use the Ioniq 5 N at the racetrack, it is capable of 20 minutes of track driving, then another 20 minutes of track time after a quick DC fast charge (it can go from 10 percent to 80 percent in roughly 20 minutes).

If you’re charging at home using a Level 2 charger, you’ll get a full charge overnight in just over 8 hours.

PRICE

The Ioniq 5 N and all its power come at a cost, with my test vehicle coming in at $68,685. There is only one trim level and few options offered, so this is what the vehicle will cost you, and it’s a pretty hefty step up from the regular, non-”N” version of the Ioniq 5.

While the Ioniq 5 N has few true rivals, high-performance EV offerings from Tesla and Ford and BMW are available at similar or lower pricing. But those who are more affordable lack the track-ready sophistication of the Ioniq 5 N. You’ll pay a good chunk of change for the Ioniq 5 N, but you’ll also see where that money is going.

Moving up into the six-figure range, other performance EVs start to appear that rival the Ioniq 5 N’s performance, but the price difference strengthens the Ioniq’s value proposition.

You also get Hyundai’s industry-leading warranties, including:
— 5-year/60,000 mile new vehicle warranty
— 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty
— 10-year/100,000 mile electric vehicle system warranty
— 3-year/36,000 mile complimentary maintenance
— 5-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance

BOTTOM LINE

If you want to go electric, get an SUV, and have a ton of fun, there are few options that fit the bill.

But the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the rare example that does check all those boxes, and with flying colors. While its range ideally would be longer than 221 miles, there is very little not to like about this vehicle.

You’ll enjoy every minute you’re behind the wheel, and look great while doing it.
