The Toyota exhibit at the 2016 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), from January 16-24 in Detroit, provides a glimpse at this transformational change to mobility while showing off the full line of new cars, trucks and SUVs available today.
Fresh off of announcements at CES (Consumer Electronics Show), which revealed Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics research plans by the new Toyota Research Institute Inc. (TRI) and the commercialization of a telematics system using SmartDeviceLink, Toyota arrives in Detroit to showcase its vision of the connected car and future mobility.
Toyota will use exhibit displays to tell its AI story. One exhibit has small moving vehicles on a table that learn how to drive in a congested environment.
Do you own a drone? If so, there are important restrictions in federal law that you should know.
Unmanned aircraft systems, popularly called drones, have become increasingly popular and less expensive in recent years. However, many people may not be aware that they are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration, which also controls private and commercial aircraft. FAA regulations restrict drone use within areas where they may interfere with other air traffic, such as an FAA rules also prohibit drone use over most federal land, such as national forests and parks.
A drone can annoy visitors to these public places, typically seeking peace and quiet. A drone may disturb, or even harass, wildlife. Drones may also interfere with other aerial activity such as wildfire detection and suppression. There have been several incidents in recent years in which firefighters have had to suspend the use of aircraft in fighting wildfires because of the presence of private drones.
Recent FAA regulations require the registration of drones above a certain weight or face civil and criminal penalties. The Huron-Manistee National Forests encourage the public to be aware of these regulations and the responsibility involved in flying a drone by visiting their website at: https://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/faqs/

Volvo’s got a tough row to hoe in the United States as it battles with other automakers for market share here.
In addition to the brand having a very small number of sales annually to begin with (about 60,000), it also has to deal with some level of concern among U.S. buyers that it is now a Chinese company, which is true on some level since a Chinese automaker (Geely) bought the company a few years back.
But that doesn’t mean the company is throwing in the towel in the U.S.
In fact, they’ve gone full steam ahead to attract luxury SUV buyers with an all-out redesign on their at-one-time-very-popular XC90 model (which is still made in Sweden). This SUV had continued to fall behind its rivals in recent years with no reboot in ages, but its day has finally come for a facelift -- and the changes are pretty much in every corner -- with something new to find throughout its design, under the hood and in the tech setup.
I recently spent some time in an XC90, and I’m back with a full report.
When you talk about convertibles, there are a few names that come to mind -- and one of those is the Mazda Miata. Around for two and a half decades, this vehicle has been popular from the start, and for good reason -- it’s damn fun to drive and looks great.
I recently tested a 2016 Miata and I’ve back with a full report.
With seemingly everyone driving a truck or an SUV these days, it’s easy to forget about vans -- but they are still a part of the landscape in the automotive world, both full-sized and compact versions.
One such entry in this small but competitive category is the RAM ProMaster City, which I recently got a chance to test.
Competing primarily with the Ford Transit Connect, Nissan’s NV200 and the Chevy City Express, this mini version of the full-size RAM ProMaster van takes a simple approach to vanning -- lots of space and some power.
Here’s my full report after some time driving a 2015 ProMaster City.
What do people want in a car? That’s the question every automaker asks as they try to build an audience.
One word that will keep coming up if that question is posed to a group of people: Safety -- people want to know their families are in good hands when they get behind the wheel of a vehicle.
For Subaru, this is not news, as they have long been advocates in the area of safety and remained ahead of the curve. I recently tested out a 2015 Subaru Legacy, their entry in the mid-sized sedan category, and found that not only did it live up to Subie’s safety reputation, it had a bit of pep under the hood as well.
What exactly is that thing? it’s a Nissan Juke, thank you very much for asking.
I got quite a bit of that recently, when I spent a week testing the supremely unique 2015 Nissan Juke NISMO RS, which makes no effort to blend in with the crowd.
The Juke has always been somewhat of an odd duck, and the NISMO package I tested only furthers that. Here’s my full report on the vehicle and how it measures up against other compact crossovers.
In the grand scheme of things, luxury automaker Infiniti’s bread-and-butter is in its smaller, sportier rides; but that doesn’t mean it’s stepping back its efforts in the SUV field -- quite the opposite in fact.
With a full lineup spanning from the QX50 to the QX80, there’s a size for everyone, and the biggest of them all is the QX80, which is a rarity in today’s automotive world -- the full-size truck-based three-row luxury SUV. I recently drove a 2015 Infiniti QX80, and I’m back with a full report on my experience.
