2017 Toyota Prius Prime makes its debut

At the 2016 New York International Auto Show, Toyota unveiled the new Prius Prime, an ultra-efficient model with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
The Prius Prime’s manufacturer-estimated 120 or above MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) is expected to be the highest MPGe rating of any Plug-in Hybrid.* It also represents a substantial 26-percent enhancement over its predecessor, a result of greater battery capacity and an improved hybrid system.

In hybrid mode, the Prius Prime is targeting a hybrid MPG equal to or better than the Prius liftback.
The 2017 Prius Prime combines an electrifying design with an even more capable electric powertrain than the previous-generation Prius Plug-in Hybrid. The Prius Prime is expected to offer an estimated two times the electric range of the previous model -- 22 miles – meeting the daily commuter distance of over half of U.S. drivers, and drive at speeds up to 84 mph without leaving EV mode.

All luxury automakers have a sporty flagship sedan aimed at high-end clients looking for some glitz in their daily drive -- and Infiniti has the Q70 as its offering in that mix. Battling sedans from names like Lexus, BMW, Benz, Acura and Cadillac, it’s got some big battles to fight -- so how does it hold up?

I recently spent some time in an Infiniti Q70L (the extended length version) and I’m back with a full report.

When I hear the name GMC, I think of trucks -- its Sierra pickups most specifically, and its Yukon full-size SUVs, which are based off of a truck body.

But let’s not forget that GMC still competes in the crossover marketplace too -- with its midsize Acadia offering, plus the baby of the bunch -- the GMC Terrain.

The Terrain is getting a bit dated compared to some competitors, but remains in the battlefield in the ever-crowded small SUV/crossover segment. I recently spent some time in a 2016 GMC Terrain Denali, and I’m back with a full report.

Beauty is only skin deep. But when it comes to vehicles, there’s something special about a vehicle that doesn’t look like everything else on the road and pushes boundaries.

Such is the case with the 2016 Lexus RX350, which features a daring design that goes against the typical look you see in today’s cookie-cutter vehicles. The moment I saw it for the first time, I was impressed.

But how would it drive? I’m back with a full recap after a week in the RX350.

When I saw the name of NASCAR's CEO Brian France trending on Twitter, I knew something wasn't right -- he's not famous enough to trend unless he did something completely off the reservation.

And when I clicked on it, I was right -- he (along with racers Bill Elliott, Ryan Newman, Chase Elliott and David Ragan) had publicly endorsed Donald Trump, giving the world the impression that the sport and its fans are supporters of a guy who has support from white supremacist groups and has openly denounced most minority groups in one way or another. ... Not exactly a good PR move for the sport you're supposed to be attempting to grow the audience. Despite NASCAR's assertion that this is a "private personal decision by Brian," it appears quite the opposite to everyone in the world who read about it.

Here are the facts:

-- Jimmie Johnson has tied Dale Earnhardt on the all-time wins list with his 76th race win. He will most certainly win many more and possibly approach triple digits in race wins before he retires.
-- Jimmie Johnson has six Cup titles, and one more will tie him with Earnhardt (and he's now in the Chase and could do it as soon as this year.)
-- It's possible Jimmie Johnson will not only tie Earnhardt and Petty's 7 titles, but blow past it and win 8 or more. He's just as strong a driver now as he was when he started fifteen years ago.

After the win Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Johnson honored Earnhardt on track and was humble about his accomplishment:

"I entered the sport just hoping I could win a race and keep a job for a few years, and to have 76 and tie Dale Earnhardt Sr is something I'm very, very proud of. I didn't have a chance to race against him, unfortunately, but today ‑‑ there's been a big void in my mind about not having that chance to race against him, and it was literally a handful of months away from having that opportunity. So to tie him today, for myself personally, it gives me a little something ‑‑ it's a little bit of attachment to the great Dale Earnhardt and something I'm very proud of," Johnson said.
