LOOKS
The exterior design of the redesigned 7-series is long, sleek and attractive, and oozes class. Its stunning looks will turn heads, though the large, kidney grille design will no doubt be divisive.
It features stunning crystal headlights, and an extra long hood that helps the 7-series stand out in the class.
Among its unique features are the multiple options for opening and closing the doors, including a button on the dashboard, a button on the door itself, as well as a hidden physical handle.
Other exterior highlights include power-folding, heated side mirrors, adaptive LED headlights, shadowline exterior trim, and 21-inch jet black wheels.
There are also soft-close doors that will slow down as they're being closed and gently pull shut. The vehicle also features a panoramic glass roof with LED inlays.
Moving inside, you’ll see the 7-series truly shines with an immaculate design that’s as high-class as you’ll find in the segment.
It features leather upholstery, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated seats, four-zone automatic climate control, multi-color ambient interior lighting, and some of the most intricate stitching on the seats that I’ve seen in any luxury ride. There’s also some attractive metal accents in the vehicle’s design, and nothing about the 7-series feels cheap. This is high-class through and through.
The vehicle has the unique feature of allowing the rear seats to turn into a literal theater, but more on that later.
The dashboard features lighted glass that changes colors based on the mode you set in the car. A huge horizontal one-piece infotainment screen runs across the entire dash. Well-placed physical controls are included both in the center of the vehicle and on the steering wheel, and this truly looks and feels like a vehicle from the future.
All passengers in the 2023 7-series will have a truly plush experience. In terms of comfort, you get massaging seats in both the front and rear, which do their job very well, and offer multiple options and speeds. Cargo space is about average with 14 cubic feet available in the trunk.
Most commands in the vehicle are done via touch-sensitive controls, with very few physical buttons, but I got used to it pretty quickly.
Seating for all five passengers in the 7-series is roomy and comfortable.
Put all of these features together and you have an interior package that can take on the best of the best in the luxury sedan segment.
The optional M Sport Professional package adds a high-performance braking system, spoiler and black exterior trim.
HOW’S THE RIDE?
The 2023 BMW 760i xDrive sedan is powered by one of the best motors you’ll find anywhere in the luxury car realm.
That would be a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 delivering a massive 536 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, and incorporating a 48V mild hybrid system to improve acceleration and fuel economy.
This is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission with Sport and Manual modes, along with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
All-wheel drive comes standard on this trim level, while the base version of the 7-series features rear-wheel drive.
An adaptive air suspension is also featured, helping the vehicle adjust for ride height and comfort. And an Autobahn Package provides active roll stabilization.
Other driving features include Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control, and 4-wheel ventilated anti-lock disc brakes with Dynamic Brake Control and Cornering Brake Control.
If you opt for the base 740i trim level, your power will be a bit less, but still impressive, with a 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder engine offering 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, along with rear-wheel drive.
The driving experience in the 760i xDrive sedan is one of the most enjoyable times I’ve had behind the wheel this year, or any year for that matter. The vehicle is powerful, yet smooth as silk simultaneously. You can drive 100 mph and feel like you’re going half that speed.
If acceleration is your thing, the 760i will go from 0 to 60 in roughly 3.5 seconds.
Yet it remains a smooth and quiet ride throughout, handles and corners brilliantly, and is truly agile for such a large sedan. And braking is also quite effective for a vehicle this size.
All in all, this is a vehicle that is a true pleasure to drive, whether on the main roads or the highways, straight paths or curvy trails. You’ll want to find excuses to take it out of the garage.
TECHNOLOGY, SAFETY
When it comes to technology, the 7-series is not playing around, asserting itself as a leader in the segment with a futuristic look and feel.
I’ll start with the standout feature that truly puts the 760i xDrive in a class of its own — the Executive Lounge package and rear entertainment system including a 31.3-inch theater screen that folds down from the ceiling.
Yes, your rear passengers can literally get a theater experience while riding in the back of the vehicle. Content is streamed to the large screen via the vehicle’s on-board Wi-Fi hotspot. And with the Executive Lounge setup, the rear seats recline and include a massage feature, a footrest comes up, and you can truly relax while you enjoy the entertainment. It’s truly a limo-level experience that’s rare to find in a car, and you’ll want to be chauffeured around in this ride. People will fight for the back seat.
Moving to the front of the vehicle, there’s also an excellent infotainment setup featured in the 7-series. It’s centered around a customizable, massive rectangular 14.9-inch touchscreen that is easy to control, and as bright, attractive and as modern-looking as any system out there.
Voice commands were understood every time in my time with the vehicle, and the navigation system is accurate and adapts well when routes must be adjusted.
The vehicle features adjustable ambient lighting and its overall ambience is class-leading. There are so many settings to adjust on the system that you could spend hours going through the menus.
Other unique features include small remote control screens on the rear armrests that give the back seat passengers power to adjust window blinds, music and much more. BMW also includes charging ports on the back of the front seats, into which rear passengers can plug in their devices.
A wireless phone charger is included, as well as an exquisite Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system that will please audiophiles. Satellite radio is included with a one-year subscription.
Moving on to safety, BMW also delivers in this regard, delivering a bevy of helpful systems in line with the overall high quality of the 7-series.
A customizable head-up display displays important information in the driver’s sight line by projecting it onto the windshield, keeping eyes on the road.
The Active Driving Assistant system performs effectively and uses various systems to keep the 7-series inside its lane and at the proper speed without driver input.
The 7-series features multiple camera views, including a bird’s eye view that helps when navigating tight parking situations.
Other safety features include: Adaptive Full LED Headlight, front and rear Head Protection System (HPS), airbags throughout the vehicle, Automated Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping Assist, Frontal Collision Warning, and Active Blind Spot Detection.
MPG
The official fuel mileage numbers on the 2023 BMW 760i xDrive are 18 city/26 highway/21 combined.
For such a powerful engine, I was surprised to find that these numbers are actually quite competitive for the segment — holding up well against the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 and Genesis G90.
And while fuel economy isn’t the first thing on the mind for luxury sedan buyers, it’s nice to see some respectable numbers put up by the vehicle.
Also, if you opt for the 740i model and its more efficient V6, numbers improve to 25 city/31 highway.
PRICE
Get ready for some sticker shock.
My test 7-series vehicle was priced just over $149K, and the base price starts at $96K for the 740i trim level and $117K for the 760i xDrive trim.
The pricing is similar to what you’ll pay for a Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan, and more expensive than the top sedan offerings from Genesis, Audi and Lexus.
With the large price difference between the two trim options, you’ll need to think hard about how important it is for you to get the upgraded V8 engine and all-wheel drive included on the 760i.
If the math doesn’t work for you on the 760i, you’re still in great shape with the performance of the six-cylinder, rear-wheel base offering on the 740i.
In terms of warranties, the 7-series offers:
— 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Warranty
— 4-year/50,000-mile Powertrain Warranty
— 3 year/36,000 miles scheduled maintenance coverage via BMW Ultimate Care Maintenance Program
— 12-year/Unlimited Mileage Rust Perforation Limited Warranty
— 4-year/Unlimited Mileage Roadside Assistance Program
BOTTOM LINE
BMW delivers a tremendous ride quality, ornate design, and some of the most futuristic tech and safety systems you’ll find in any vehicle on its redesigned 2023 7-series.
Functional, beautiful and extra classy, if you’ve got a large pile of cash to throw around, there are few luxury vehicles that will deliver at this price range like the BMW 760i xDrive sedan.
