Four doors are better than two — at least in the minds of some car buyers.

So it makes sense that BMW is bringing back a redesigned 4-series Gran Coupe for 2022. This vehicle is a sort of hybrid between its two-door 4-series coupe, and its 3-series sedan, aiming to be a best of both worlds type of vehicle.

The goal here is to create more accessibility and room for rear passengers without compromising the driving aesthetic that BMW’s reputation brings.

With two powerful engine options, the Gran Coupe delivers — which is essential in the extremely competitive luxury car genre.

I recently spent some time behind the wheel of a 2022 BMW 430i Gran Coupe, and I’m back with a full report on whether it achieves its goal of maintaining driving excellence while increasing practicality.

LOOKS

The 2022 BMW 4-series Gran Coupe gets a beautiful and sporty updated exterior styling which is based on its 4-series coupe — but it adds two more doors. You'll get lots of stares and compliments on this vehicle, whether you’re driving or it’s sitting in your driveway.

Exterior features include an extended Shadowline trim, power glass moonroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, power-folding and heated side mirrors, and satin aluminum exterior trim. With the M Sport package, you’ll get 19-inch M-style wheels and an M steering wheel.

The interior of the 4-series Gran Coupe is comfortable and well-designed. Quality materials are used throughout and the driver and passenger have plenty of leg and head room. Only downside is the tight backseat area: You can have rear passengers, moreso than some sports car competitors, but it’s better if they are smaller in stature.

Interior features include: Multi-zone Climate Control, front sport seats, heated and leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, anthracite headliner, heated front seats and ambient lighting. One highlight is the quality of the seating, which was Cognac Vernasca Leather in my test vehicle.

Trunk space is ample for the segment, and controls are designed in a user-friendly manner for driver and passenger.

HOW’S THE RIDE?

BMW is known for delivering vehicles that drivers will love to pilot, and the 2022 4-series Gran Coupe continues that tradition. It is perfect for a long Sunday drive. And you'll look forward to driving it daily.

If it’s speed you want, the 4-series rockets from 0 to 60 … or 0 to 100 for that matter.

It offers an effortless drive … with instant pickup, sharp turning and precision handling. Braking is immediate. This is truly a driver's car.

The vehicle I tested — a 430i model — featured a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine with several driving modes (Eco, Comfort, Sport and Sport+). This is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and it offers 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

The M440i models get an upgrade to a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine, featuring 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet.

The 430i models are all Rear-Wheel Drive, while the M440i models come in both RWD and AWD.

The 4-series features Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control, anti-lock brakes, Dynamic Brake Control and Cornering Brake Control.

Adding to the drive quality is the M Sport package, which adds on BMW’s Adaptive M Suspension, as well as variable sport steering. You can also add the Dynamic Handling Package, which includes an M Sport Differential and M Sport Brakes

TECHNOLOGY, SAFETY

On the tech side, I’ll start with the center of it all, the infotainment system. The 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe features the iDrive 7.0 system, which includes Navigation capability.

The system can be operated both by voice or via the iDrive controller in the vehicle’s center console. The voice commands work well overall, but there were occasionally some hiccups where the vehicle did not immediately understand my instructions. In those scenarios, I relied on the user-friendly touch commands.

Connectivity options include real-time traffic information, on-street parking Info in select cities, and BMW Remote Services. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay allow the driver to stream music and calls to the vehicle’s sound system.

Audiophiles will enjoy the sounds from the audio system — whether it’s the standard 10-speaker system, or the optional upgrade to a 16-speaker Harman Kardon system. Sounds are crisp, and audio options include SiriusXM satellite radio (a one-year subscription is included, then fees apply).

The vehicle offers features such as a WiFi hotspot, and wireless phone charging. There are also unique features such as the ability to open the trunk with leg motion, no touch needed.

For a fun ride like this, the 4-series has an impressive amount of safety features.
These include a front and rear Head Protection System, airbags throughout the vehicle, LED headlights, Frontal Collision Warning, Active Driving Assistant with Active Blind Spot Detection, Front and Rear Park Distance Control.

A rear-view camera is part of the Parking Assistance Package, which is an affordable option and features Parking Assistant Plus, Active Park Distance Control, and Surround View with 3D View.

MPG

The official fuel mileage numbers on the 2022 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe are 25 city/34 highway/28 combined.

In my testing, which was mainly done in Sport mode and on city streets, I averaged around 24 miles per gallon. These are respectable numbers on par or better than rivals in this vehicle class from Audi, Mercedes-Benz and beyond, so fuel mileage likely won’t be a deciding factor for most buyers in the segment.

PRICE

The 2022 4-Series Gran Coupe that I tested was priced just over $56,000; and its base price starts about $46K. The two trim levels are the base 430i model, and the more powerful M440i option.

Warranties on the vehicle include:

— 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty

— 12-year Unlimited Mileage Rust Perforation Limited Warranty

— 4-year Unlimited Mileage Roadside Assistance Program

BOTTOM LINE

The 2022 BMW 4-series Gran Coupe offers a fun, fast and sporty ride that lives up to BMW’s reputation, and is a bit more accommodating than the standard 4 series coupe.

Not my first choice for a practical daily ride, but it’s definitely one of the top options for hitting the road and having fun.
