LOOKS
The 2026 Volvo XC60 features an attractive exterior design, including a front grille that is larger for 2026, but still understated compared to designs from rival luxury brands like Lexus or BMW. This is classic Swedish design — more minimalistic and not in your face or overdone.
Wheel sizes range from 18 to 21 inches, and my test vehicle featured sharp 21-inch 5-V Spoke Glossy Black Diamond Cut Wheels.
There are mild style tweaks for 2026 that help upgrade the exterior, and the XC60 features a panoramic sunroof with power sunshade, and glossy black integrated roof rails. The brand’s traditional Thor’s Hammer lighting is also present.
Moving inside the XC60, you’ll see where Volvo solidifies itself as a legitimate luxury brand. While maintaining the minimalist mindset, it also features extremely comfortable seats, offered in either Perforated Nappa Leather or Navy Herringbone Weave, with massage capability. Front seats are both heated and ventilated.
You also get an attractive and tailored dashboard, and high-quality materials throughout the interior. A standout feature is the one-of-a-kind Crystal Geartronic gear shifter by Orrefors, which simply looks beautiful and helps differentiate the Volvo brand. The interior quality of the XC60 is quite frankly on a level with even more expensive luxury vehicle options.
Cargo space comes in at 21 cubic feet behind the second row, and 54 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. Seating is quite comfortable in terms of head and leg room for all 5 passengers, but the cargo space is mid-pack for the segment.
HOW’S THE RIDE?
The 2026 Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid is powered by a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that is paired with an electric motor and an 18.8 kWh battery. This works alongside an 8-speed automatic transmission, and output is a combined 455 horsepower (312 from gas and 143 from electric) and 523 pound-feet of torque.
These numbers are extremely impressive, and significantly higher than rival plug-in hybrid luxury SUVs. And if you opt for the standard gas version of the XC60, output is much lower, at 247 or 295 horsepower depending on the engine you choose.
The XC60 features anti-lock brakes, plus Electronic Stability Control, and all-wheel drive is standard on the PHEV model. There’s also an optional active air suspension to improve the ride.
All the power under the hood means that the XC60 plug-in hybrid gets moving fast and is tremendously fun to drive. Its 0-to-60 speed lands in the low-to-mid 4-second range, making it quite the rocketship and quicker to achieve this than key rivals.
You feel that instant power kick in, and it then maintains a smooth drive quality. Just as it looks classy, the XC60 also drives classy. It’s one of the fastest and most enjoyable luxury vehicles to drive.
Drive modes offered on the XC60 plug-in include Hybrid (switches back and forth between gas/electric). Power (this is the fun mode). Pure (only EV driving). Off-Road (good for light trails), and AWD (great for bad weather).
The XC60 hybrid tows a maximum of 3,500 pounds.
TECHNOLOGY, SAFETY
The XC60’s tech setup — run through an 11.2-inch touchscreen display powered by Google — is large and clear, but also can be confusing to use at times and overcomplicated.
I would recommend that Volvo simplify the operation so controls are more easily accessible, and I did not like that almost all the climate controls were contained within the touchscreen.
On the plus-side, the XC60’s sound system options are excellent. A standard 10-speaker setup is offered, and you can choose an optional 14-speaker Harmon Kardon system, or the top offering — a 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins high-fidelity system. Audiophiles will be thrilled with the high-quality performance of either of the two upgraded stereo options.
You also can connect your phone to the touchscreen via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and stream music via Bluetooth. Multiple USB ports are included, and the Google systems incorporated include Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play Store.
In terms of safety, Volvo is a brand that has a tradition of being a safety leader, so it’s no shocker that this vehicle comes with a 5-star government safety rating.
All of the many safety systems included do their job effectively without being overly intrusive, and the XC60 is one of the safest SUVs available from any automaker.
The XC60’s rearview cameras display both what is behind the vehicle, and a 360-degree view from above showing all around the car. This is tremendously helpful when maneuvering the vehicle.
Other safety features on the XC60 include:
— Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
— Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
— Adaptive Cruise Control with semi-autonomous driving mode
— Blind Spot Information System, with Steer Assist and Cross Traffic Alert
— Collision Mitigation (detects vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and large animals)
— Airbags throughout the vehicle
— Whiplash Protection System in front seats
— Automatic unlocking after collision
— Head-Up Display
MPG, RANGE, CHARGING
The 2026 Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid is rated at 63 MPGe (combined gas and electric). It can travel an estimated 35 miles on electric power only, then once the electric miles are used up it will average 28 miles per gallon.
For comparison, the gas version of the XC60 delivers 23 mpg city/30 mpg highway/26 mpg combined.
So who should choose the plug-in hybrid over the gas version? It’s the best fit for people who mostly will use the vehicle for short drives, and regularly charge the vehicle at home. If done properly, your time between gas fill-ups in the XC60 PHEV will be few and far between.
However, if you’re going to do longer drives for the most part, and don’t plan to charge it regularly, I would recommend skipping the PHEV and going for the gas version of the XC60.
In terms of charging timeline, you can charge the XC60 PHEV fully (0 to 100 percent) with a Level 2 charger at home in approximately 5 hours, or quicker if there is some juice remaining. I wouldn’t recommend relying on public charging if you’re going to take home a plug-in hybrid.
PRICE
The 2026 Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid that I tested was at the high end of the price range, coming in at just over $79,000. The base price starts around $62K.
Trim levels include Core, Plus, Ultra, and Polestar.
Alternatively, if you don’t want the plug-in version, a standard XC60 starts as low as $50K, making it the more affordable option.
Warranties are also respectable on the 2026 XC60 plug-in hybrid, including:
— 48-Month/50,000-mile overall warranty
— 96-Month/100,000-mile hybrid components warranty
— Complimentary maintenance coverage for 3 years/36,000 miles
— Four years of roadside assistance
BOTTOM LINE
The 2026 Volvo XC60 PHEV offers a speedy hybrid powertrain, high-class interior and stylish Swedish design.
The tech setup could use some tweaks to simplify operation, but other than that the XC-60 plug-in hybrid is a home run if you can afford its luxury price tag.
