Volvo

Volvo (10)

Before we even dive into the eco-edition of the Volvo XC60, let’s just establish a baseline here:

The standard gas-only XC60 is one of the best luxury SUVs on the market -- period. My time in that vehicle stands out, in part due to its truly luxurious interior, sharp panoramic moonroof, top-notch leather upholstery and of course a great ride quality. Last but not least, massaging front seats are offered that actually do a great job massaging your back and shoulders and are easy to control (Just don't get too comfy and lose focus on the road).

So beyond all that inherent goodness in the XC60, the question now becomes: What benefit is there to upgrade to the plug-in hybrid version of the XC60? (And a quick hint, FYI: If you want the gas-only model, I would act quickly; as Volvo has committed to launching only hybrid or electric vehicles from 2019 onward, as they fully embrace the eco-friendly movement in the auto world).

HOW’S THE RIDE?

The 2018 Volvo XC60 T8 eAWD is powered by a 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine, plus an 87 horsepower electric motor. The total combined output is a stout 400 horsepower and 472 lb.-ft. of torque.

It’s a sign you’ve really made it -- when you can pick up that high-end sedan and tool around town in true comfort and luxury.

But what do you choose? Will the traditional German offerings tempt you? How about a domestic variety like Cadillac or Lincoln? Or an Asian model like Lexus or Acura?

But hold on for a second, let’s not forget about Volvo, the Swedish brand which continues to impress with its new luxury models.

I recently spent some time in a 2018 Volvo S90, and I’m back with a full report on what it has to offer.

It takes a special vehicle and lots of effort to win top automotive awards like the North American International Auto Show’s top utility honor … and Volvo figured it out for 2018 with its XC60 reboot.

The stylish Swedish offering has drawn much acclaim in Detroit and beyond, but what’s all the hype about, and is it merited? I recently spent some time in a 2018 XC60, and I’m back with a full report.

LOOKS

Just like the larger XC90 on which it’s based, classy is the first word that comes to mind when you look at the XC60. Even sitting next to vehicles from BMW, Benz, Audi or Cadillac, the Volvo holds its own visually.

The exterior is distinctly Volvo -- somewhat bold yet still sleek and elegant. It’s a good mixed personality. 20-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires were featured on the vehicle I tested.

A panoramic moonroof with power sunshade is offered, and you will find very comfortable leather seating. The seats remain comfy on long rides, and the heated seats were very effective. The front seats can also use memory to save your settings.

Up front on the interior, you’ll find attractive and well-designed vertical slotted air vents. Another pretty touch is the subtle driftwood inlays up front. Rear seats are also roomy for the segment.

No need to fumble in your pockets, as the XC60 comes with keyless entry and drive. Four-zone climate control is featured, and you can fold down the rear seats for a good amount of storage space.

Volvo is a curious brand to most Americans. While the Swedish by origin but now Chinese-owned brand has a reputation for safe and reliable vehicles, it’s generally not thought of in the same breath as the traditional big names in the luxury segment.

Volvo continues to double-down on trying to change that view, even if they recognize that they won’t match the mostly German segment leaders in terms of pure performance most of the time, and part of that effort is focused on groundbreaking safety and tech features, in addition to creating a luxury look and feel.

I recently spent some time in a 2018 Volvo S60 sedan, and I’m back with a full report.

LOOKS
Volvo’s exteriors have never been too audacious and this is no exception. Compared to some in the luxury realm, they are downright tame, though the Volvo nameplate up front and fan-blade style grille do grab your attention.

The interior is where we start to approach the luxury level a bit more.  Front seats are high end and comfortable via their leather upholstery, and the back seats aren't far behind. You will find some nice wood grain features worked into the interior design, and no materials feel cheap inside this vehicle. Speaking of comfort, the Climate package offers heated everying: front seats, rear seats, steering wheel and even the windshield washer nozzles.

The word wagon may as well be on the extinction list, as it’s growing increasingly rare to see them on the road these days in the sea of SUVs that dominate family car buying in the U.S.A.

But fear not, wagon lovers: Volvo hasn’t forgotten about you. They continue their long wagon tradition with the Volvo V60, which also comes in a Cross Country version that I was able to spend some time in recently. Here’s my full report on what this unique vehicle offers.

Sometimes you gotta try something new.

Without much fanfare for their previous midsize sedan (the S80), Volvo got in redesign mode and debuted the Volvo S90 for the 2017 model year.
A major improvement on its predecessor, I recently spent some time in an S90 and I’ll let you know how it measures up in the always-competitive luxury sedan segment.

1. LUXURY ABOUNDS

The exterior design of the S90 makes a statement -- this isn’t your dad’s Volvo.
You get a classy design up front that screams luxury (elegantly titled the “Upright Waterfall Front Chrome Grille”), and an overall sharp look that will get you some attention. That’s not often said about a Volvo, but it can be said about the S90. Part of the improvement is a sleek new headlight design (LED lights in an design called “Thor’s Hammer” -- another great bit of language from the Swedish automaker)

Diving inside, even when compared to other midsize luxury sedans, the S90 has a well-appointed and comfy interior. One specific detail I noticed was that the leather steering wheel feels great in hands. It’s also very roomy, even in back.

The number of people who can afford three-row luxury SUVs is not a large one, but it’s a market with some of the most intense competition in the industry. Battling for those big bucks is never easy, with so many strong products available, and loyalty is hard to sway.

One automaker doing its best to compete in this niche segment is Volvo, whose flagship XC90 SUV has stepped up its game this year to compete with the big boys as well as it can.

So what does Volvo bring to this battle of luxury SUVs? … Bold but not extravagant Scandinavian design, elegant look and feel, strong engine performance and handling and tons of space … though some issues with the tech system do hold it back from true greatness (more on that later).

The Volvo brand -- once you move beyond its loyal, safety-focused followers -- finds itself in an interesting position. Volvo is not the first auto company people think of when they hear the word “luxury”, but that is how they identify (and price) their vehicles, which are up against the biggest international luxury automotive names in the world.

One of their top models is the XC60 crossover, which I recently had the chance to test. So the question is: How well does the 2017 XC60 hold up well against tough competition?

LOOKS

The XC60 is officially considered a compact SUV, but I found it to be closer in size and storage space to many midsize SUVs.

Put down the rear seats and your storage space is among the best in class. Legroom and headroom in the vehicle is excellent in all seats. Overall look and feel of the materials inside are high-class. The XC60 shows luxury pedigree, even moreso than some vehicles that cost a bit more. In part due to materials, there is a comfortable feel for the driver even on longer rides.

Exterior design on the XC60 isn’t as flashy or attractive as some rivals, but it’s nothing to sneeze at either.

As luxury cars go, you don’t see the name Volvo in the news much. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Acura, Audi, Infiniti, Cadillac, Lincoln, Jaguar/Land Rover and Porsche, along with newcomer Tesla, steal most of the headlines.

But while the Swedish brand (now Chinese-owned) isn’t as ubiquitous, a ride in a Volvo will tell you that it’s a shame more people aren’t aware of the brand.

I recently tested a 2016 Volvo S60 T5 Inscription, and I’m back with a full report on a very
positive experience behind the wheel.

And FYI, if I never even mentioned to you that this vehicle was actually “Made in China”, a label which makes some people wary based on the connotation of that phrase, you would never know, as it maintains the Swedish automaker’s heritage impressively.

Volvo’s got a tough row to hoe in the United States as it battles with other automakers for market share here.

In addition to the brand having a very small number of sales annually to begin with (about 60,000), it also has to deal with some level of concern among U.S. buyers that it is now a Chinese company, which is true on some level since a Chinese automaker (Geely) bought the company a few years back.

But that doesn’t mean the company is throwing in the towel in the U.S.

In fact, they’ve gone full steam ahead to attract luxury SUV buyers with an all-out redesign on their at-one-time-very-popular XC90 model (which is still made in Sweden). This SUV had continued to fall behind its rivals in recent years with no reboot in ages, but its day has finally come for a facelift -- and the changes are pretty much in every corner -- with something new to find throughout its design, under the hood and in the tech setup.

I recently spent some time in an XC90, and I’m back with a full report.
