The minute I saw the 2016 Audi TT coupe, I knew I was in for a very fun, and very dangerous, week.

It is a beautiful car, small but well-shaped and designed for speed. I knew I would love it, but that I’d also have to hold myself back from truly taking advantage of what it can do.

In the end, I avoided running afoul of the law, and had some great driving time in the process. Here’s my full report from my week with the hot rod.

LOOKS

The exterior of the redesigned 2016 Audi TT Coupe is curvy and stunning, as a sports car should be. This is not a family ride, it’s a fast buggy. There is a back seat but essentially no reason for it, as nobody can sit there (it can be used for storing small bags, etc.)

The inside of the TT is not overly flashy, though buyers can upgrade to Nappa leather and S Sport seats with diamond stitching. It features the usual hideaway infotainment screen that disappears into the dash when not in use, further simplifying the look inside.

One design change of note is that instead of navigation info being shown in a center console, it’s now displayed on the 12.3-inch dashboard screen right in front of your face. The center of the vehicle features a cool combination of three air vents that have buttons in the center of each of them to control temperature in the vehicle.

The TT comes in a coupe form (which I tested) and also in convertible (aka Roadster) format if you want the wind in your hair.

HOW’S THE DRIVE?

Here is where we get to the heart of why someone might by the TT coupe -- it’s ridiculously fun to drive.
You can choose from several modes, the best of which is Dynamic. When in Dynamic mode, you are basically in a racecar;

Speed from a stop is tremendous and it’s terrific on windy roads. I would’ve loved to see what it was like on a racetrack.

Sport mode is also very fast, and more basic modes can be used when you are in traffic and not facing an open road.

The vehicle features a turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine; offering 220 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. But those numbers don’t tell the whole story -- it feels like a lot more.

The TT also features Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system.

The sound is something that will stick with you too. As you get up to speed quickly (0 to 60 in 5 seconds or less), the song the motor sings is unlike anything you’ll hear in any normal sedan or coupe.

TECHNOLOGY, SAFETY, MPG

In addition to the helpful new high-tech dashboard setup, standard tech includes keyless start, rear parking sensors, LED headlights, and automatic windshield wipers and headlight. You can add the Technology Package (Navigation, Audi Connect, rearview camera) and a 680-watt surround sound Bang and Olufsen sound system.

Official fuel mileage numbers on the TT coupe are 23 city/30 highway/26 combined.

PRICE, BOTTOM LINE

My test 2016 Audi TT coupe vehicle was just over $50,000; the base price starts at $42,900.

There are other sporty rides out there from a variety of competitors in this price range or even less, but in a one-on-one battle, the TT would hold up well against most or all of the competition.

I enjoyed every minute I spent driving the TT coupe, and for folks looking for that weekend getaway car, this is definitely one to consider.
