LOOKS
The 2026 Kia K4 hatchback features one of the most standout hatchback designs you'll find in the market today — and its shape and features won't get confused with other vehicles.
It’s styled very much in line with the K4 sedan up front, but the rear comes with a hatch instead of a trunk. It measures about 11 inches shorter than the sedan, but is about half an inch taller.
My test vehicle featured a very cool Sparkling Yellow color that stood out in the crowd and grabbed lots of attention. It was a great vehicle to drive with a sunroof open, enjoying a nice day.
My test vehicle featured attractive GT-Line styling with gloss black exterior accents, LED reflector headlights and power adjustable heated outside mirrors.
The GT-Line also included the power sunroof with sunshade, LED projector headlights, LED fog lights and LED rear combination lights. Designs on the lighting all around the vehicle are quite sharp.
Moving inside, you get plenty of leg room for rear passengers, even if tall adults are in front — which is rare for a compact vehicle. There is also comfortable seating and quality materials used throughout, better than you’d find in most non-luxury hatchbacks.
Cargo volume comes in at 22 cubic feet with the seats up, and 59 cubic feet with the rear seats down. Compared to the sedan version of the K4, you’re getting extra head room and cargo space in the hatchback, making it more welcoming to both people and cargo.
If given the choice, I would opt for the K4 hatchback over the sedan.
Interior comforts and features include:
— Dual-Zone Auto Climate Control
— SynTex Seating Material
— Power Driver's Seat w/ Power Lumbar
— Heated Front Seats
— GT-Line Sport Steering Wheel w/Paddle Shifters
— Rear Air Vents
— Multi-Color LED Ambient Lighting
— Ventilated Front Seats
— Heated Steering Wheel
HOW’S THE RIDE?
Two engine offerings come with the Kia K4 hatchback.
I was able to test the more powerful one — a turbocharged, 1.6-liter, four cylinder engine offering 190 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. Lower trim levels offer a more basic 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine delivering 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet.
The turbo engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. All K4 models are FWD only, with no AWD option available.
Acceleration is strong on the turbo engine, clocking in roughly 7 seconds for its 0-to-60 time, while the base engine is more sluggish in the 9-second range.
The upgraded turbo engine is worth the selection, even if it costs a bit more. I found the K4 hatchback to be genuinely enjoyable as a daily driver. For something that doesn't cost what a luxury car would, that's a rare thing to say.
Budget buyers can go for the lower engine, but those who want a more positive driving experience will go for the turbo. Sport mode can be engaged to boost performance, and paddle shifters are included.
The K4 hatchback handles well, including in the curves, and gives off a very sporty feeling at times, more so than most competitors in this segment (I prefer the K4 experience over the Corolla or Civic hybrids, but it’s rivaled by the Mazda3 drive quality). This is boosted by a sport-tuned multi-link rear suspension.
TECHNOLOGY, SAFETY
In the K4 hatchback and across their lineup, Kia has the tech setup nailed with a very user-friendly setup.
They feature a 12.3-inch center touch screen and a digital driver display full of all your gauges and info, both of which are connected in one large piece of glass.
There are also some simple physical controls for temperature and climate, which I am glad to see are not buried inside the touchscreen controls.
Voice commands help you control things while driving without having to fiddle with the screen. And the center screen is highly customizable.
Other tech features in the K4 hatchback include:
— Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity
— Four USB-C ports (two front, two rear)
— Three-month trial of satellite radio
— Wireless Phone Charger
Music lovers can also opt for a Harman/Kardon Premium Audio System.
Regarding safety features, the Rear View Camera with its dynamic guidelines are extra helpful when backing out of tight spots, including the bird's eye view showing the entire vehicle.
You also get some basic self-driving ability through the Highway Driving Assist program, which uses a combination of radar cruise control and the lane keeping system.
A 5-star government safety rating tells the story, due in large part to the number of helpful features including:
— Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
— Airbags throughout the vehicle
— Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist - Cyclist/Jct Turning
— Lane Keeping Assist
— Driver Attention Warning & High Beam Assist
— Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist
— Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist
— Safe Exit Warning
— Smart Cruise Control w/Stop & Go
— Rear Occupant Alert
— Available adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature
— Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist - Reverse
— Parking Distance Warning-Forward/Reverse/Side
MPG
The 2026 Kia K4 hatchback’s official fuel mileage numbers are 26 city/33 highway/28 combined. In my time behind the wheel, I averaged a bit lower at 25 mpg.
Numbers on the base engine of the K4 hatchback are 28 city/34 highway/30 combined.
Several other vehicles (like the Civic and Corolla hatchbacks) in this class will give you better gas mileage, but most will also give you a worse ride quality. So you have to judge what's more important to you — fuel savings or power.
PRICE
My test vehicle, a GT-Line Turbo offering, was priced just under $33,000 and at the top of the pricing scale. Base price for the hatchback model starts about $26K.
In today’s car market dominated by expensive vehicles and an average new vehicle price around $50K, this is a downright bargain considering how well-equipped it is.
Pricing is lower than the Honda Civic, but around the same as the Mazda3 and other in-class competitors. Key trim levels include EX, GT-Line and GT-Line Turbo.
Strong warranties are class-leading, and include:
— 10-year/100,000 mile limited powertrain warranty
— 5-year/60,000 mile limited basic warranty
— 5-year/60,000 mile roadside assistance
BOTTOM LINE
If you're looking for a compact vehicle and want some alternatives to a sedan, hatchbacks are a great option to consider. And in the hatchback class, The Kia K4 hatchback is a strong new entry that should draw some converts from the sedan side.
It’s got a great price, good looks, lots of utility, strong tech and generally offers lots to love.
